“Paranormal Activity”

Greetings and salutations, swaggers of all flavors!!  I took a break from studying last night to go to a movie with a friend.  The invitation was completely random and since I invited myself, I deferred to him on choice of viewing.  After a minor mishap (I left my wallet at home) we made it to the movies in time to get good seats and watch the previews.  It was a dark and rainy night so I was already in the perfect mood for this movie and, from what I heard,” Paranormal Activity” was going to be a seriously scary scary movie. The premise of the film is that a young couple begins experiencing strange happenings in their new home.  They decide to set up a video camera to document the strange things happening in their home and hopefully find a logical explanation.  I don’t want to spoil the movie, so I will leave the plot summary at that.  Even with those two sentences, it is clear that the plot of the movie is not that complicated yet this by no means takes away from the overall effect of the film.  By having a camera documenting the strange events, you also get a glimpse at the relationship between the two people and the very real fear that is growing as the activity progresses.

As an avid fan of horror movies, I appreciate films such as “Paranormal Activity”, who are able to terrify audiences very subtly and without the gratuitous use of gore.  True skill in cinematography led the director to set up shots of the room that made the film look organic while good acting made the movie look even more natural.  The slightly shaky and homemade appearance of the shooting only added more credibility to the story.  The overall simplicity of the film allowed you to become more emotionally invested and increased the level of disturbance as the characters’ frustration, desperation, and general terror grew.

All in all, I think this was a GREAT movie and a future horror film classic.  Go see it NOW; it’s definitely better in theaters, sharing your terror with strangers and feeding off one another.  Take a tastee because this movie is guaranteed to incite some fearful movie theater snuggling.   Also, this movie will have you jumping at every sound you hear in your house so don’t be surprised to receive an invite for an overnight visit to settle her nerves (and secretly, yours too!).  Happy Haunting!

Ciao Bellos!
