WTDDFW September ’09

WTDDFW (What to do Dallas/Fort Worth) is a new monthly post I am embarking upon to share venues/events occurring throughout the city. By no means do I consider myself an expert of the DFW area but I would like to consider myself a well versed/cultured individual willing to try different happenings. Before diving into the post you will notice the following congruencies about September’s events:

1. They work extremely well for dating or big group venues (Score big with the honey or fellow in your life or simply round up your friends for a day of fun)

2. They are in three distinct cities of the DFW area (Seeing different areas of the DFW area, branching out)

3. Each event at the minimum is lasting for a weekend (Dedicate time to handle one’s obligations and still get an opportunity to attend said events).

Jazz by the Boulevard (Sept. 11-13)

A great way to diversify one’s musical range happens to reside in this festival which celebrates jazz in the Camp Bowie District of Fort Worth. I attended this event last year with a couple of friends and it makes for a good group event but can also be utilized as changing of events in your dating game. At this event you can expect a diverse crowd enjoying the smooth grooves of jazz from the two main stages. Headliners that have been confirmed for this year include The Blind Boys of Alabama, Chris Botti, and George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic. Outside of this, Jazz by the Boulevard features numerous cooking demonstrations, food vendors, and numerous artists displaying and selling their creative works. Admission for this festival is $5, however you can reserve tables and even do VIP tickets for a corporate gathering or merely just to schmooze with friends. Festival times are Friday 5pm to 11pm, Saturday Noon to 11pm, and Sunday 2pm to 8pm.  For more details visit their site at http://www.fortworthjazz.com/

GrapeFest (Sept 17-20)

Of the three events featured in this post, this is the only one I have not attended. GrapeFest is a yearly wine festival held in Grapevine (Go figure right?). This event has been around for 23 years, features a wide spectrum of wines for consumers, and is ranked as one of the top 100 events in the United States and Canada. Congruent to Jazz by the Boulevard, there are cooking demonstrations however, there are also demonstrations to show excellent wine and food pairings (can’t really go wrong here). A surprising detail about this festival is that it is publicized as a family event. Carnival games, Ice Carving, a KidZone, and the infamous Grape Stomp (in which you have an opportunity to stomp grapes competitively) seem to make for a diversely epic three days of fun, family, and entertainment. Information for Grapefest can be accessed at https://www.grapevinetexasusa.com/GrapeFest/index.html.

State Fair (Sept 25-Oct 18)

Anyone born, raised, or temporarily residing in Dallas has heard of the yearly State Fair. Although the Fair takes up only a week in September, I deem it necessary to mention as soon as possible. Where else can you get a turkey leg, corn dog, and nearly any other type of food you could think of fried(Side Note: Some of the Creative and Best Taste fried foods the past 3 yrs include Fried Coke, Fried Cookie Dough, and Chicken Fried Bacon)? The fair features numerous carnival rides, musical acts that hit the Chevrolet main stage, chef exhibitions, and a crazy auto show gallery. In addition to this, two Saturdays during the fair you can catch the crazy fans of the Oklahoma-Texas rivalry or the classic Historically Black College University matchup of Grambling-Prairie View A&M. General admission tickets for the fair run $15 dollars with parking on the actual fair grounds going for $10. There are numerous surrounding areas where people will wave you in for parking for miscellaneous prices of $5, $7, $8, or etc., so you may want to pursue that option. For more detailed information on the State Fair, feel free to access their link at http://www.bigtex.com/.

Bonus Event: Swaggerful Labor Day Events (Sept 4-7)

Being the first post on events to attend in the DFW area, we infuse your September with a weekend of events that occur outside of the area. Yes I realize this does not make any sense at all, but if you currently live or willing to make a trip to Austin we believe a good time will ensue. Here is what we have in mind so far:

Sept 4th– Day to come in town, hit 6th Street for Nightlife

Sept 5th– Floating the river out in the New Braunfels area, Texas Roadhouse, hit the 6th Street Nightlife

Sept 6th– Church, Relax, Dinner/Game Night

Sept 7th– Barbecue/Departure

There is not any doubt that this weekend will be filled with memories and pure fun and shenanigans. If you are interested in any events or have any recommendations for any future WTDDFW feel free to leave a comment or  contact personally at dshep@swaggerful.com.
